When Does a Tooth Need a Crown?
Your Ft. Lauderdale dentist may recommend a crown or a cap on a tooth for many reasons. The most common reasons a crown is needed would be:
- A very large filling that can no longer be filled again
- The tooth is at risk of breaking due to a large filling
- A tooth that has had a root canal
- The tooth is painful, sensitive to bite on, and diagnosed with fractures
- A tooth that is broken in a way that a traditional filling cannot restore
- To replace large, unattractive fillings
What’s Involved in Getting a Crown?
Getting a dental crown usually requires two office visits. During the first visit, the tooth is prepared for the crown. Dr. Dixon will reduce the tooth in size to make room for a stronger, permanent crown and any unhealthy, decayed or unstable tooth structure is removed. After the preparation is complete, a detailed impression will be taken, which is sent to the dental lab where your new crown will be made.
In the interim, we will make you a temporary crown to wear while you wait for your permanent crown to be made. Special care is required while wearing your temporary crown since it is made to be removed easily when the permanent crown is ready to be placed permanently.
Fixed Dental Bridges in Ft. Lauderdale
A dental bridge replaces a missing tooth or sometimes, multiple missing teeth. If someone is not able to replace a missing tooth with a dental implant, a traditional fixed bridge is a great solution! With a traditional bridge, the artificial tooth is anchored by two or more adjacent crowns. These crowns are placed on healthy teeth to ensure they are strong enough to endure many years of service.
If you have a missing tooth and fail to replace it, unfortunate things may happen. The adjacent teeth may shift towards or lean into the empty space. Also, the tooth on the opposite jaw may drift into the missing space. So, it is essential that you try to replace your missing tooth before your other healthy teeth are affected!
