Dental Exams and Digital X-Rays in Ft. Lauderdale, FL
Routine dental exams or “check-ups” are essential to ensure your gums and teeth stay healthy. At Dixon and Dixon, we understand your schedule can be busy. Our office is conveniently located near downtown Ft. Lauderdale, Broward General Hospital and Port Everglades.
What to Expect from Your Dental Exam
At the comprehensive dental exam, Dr. Dixon will review your medical history, and discuss any dental concerns you may have. We will carefully examine your teeth, gums, and oral tissues. We can also use an intra-oral camera to allow you to see inside your mouth and we can identify any concerns with your teeth and gums. Our comprehensive exam includes:
- Discussion of your dental needs
- Review of your medical history
- Examination of your teeth
- Periodontal evaluation
- Oral cancer screening
- Digital dental x-rays
Oral Cancer Screening
During your dental exam, Dr. Dixon will look for signs of pre-cancerous or cancerous conditions in your mouth. Your Ft. Lauderdale dentist will also look and feel around the sides of your neck and under the jaw. Your lips, tongue, roof, and floor of your mouth will also be examined. Early detection of oral cancer is paramount. Risk factors for oral cancer are:
- Tobacco use of any kind including cigarettes, cigars, pipes snuff and chewing tobacco
- Heavy use of alcohol
- A previous diagnosis of oral cancer
- A history sun exposure which increases your risk of developing lip cancer
How Often do I Need Dental X-rays?
At Dixon and Dixon, we utilize digital dental x-rays. Digital x-rays allow immediate viewing of the teeth with less radiation exposure to the patient. The radiographic image is displayed on a large screen for careful inspection.
Everyone’s mouth and dental needs are different, which is why recommendations for x-rays can vary from patient to patient. For an adult patient, it is important to have a current full set of x-rays for a complete initial examination. The frequency of check-up x-rays can differ depending upon each patient’s dental history and need for dental restorations and or periodontal therapy.
How Often do I Need a Dental Exam?
After your initial comprehensive exam, it is recommended to have a dental check-up exam every six months. During this periodic exam, we can assess your dental progress and make any recommendations for future dental work, periodontal therapy or frequency of check-up x-rays.
